The Business Of Storytelling

Siddharth Kumar Tewary, Founder and Chief Creative, Swastik Productions tells the tale of transforming Epics into successful Television Brands

BY Siddharth Kumar Tewary
13th January 2025
The Business Of Storytelling

Over the past decade, I have had the privilege of retelling the timeless stories from India’s rich history. The opportunity to bring these ancient tales to life in a way that resonates with today’s generation has been both humbling and rewarding. Indian history isn’t just a repository of ancient wisdom; it’s a living, breathing collection of stories that speak to the essence of human experience—lessons of love, duty, honour, sacrifice and spirituality.

As I reflect on this journey, I’m deeply aware that this work isn’t just about entertainment; it’s about offering something meaningful to audiences, especially the youth. The challenge has always been to find a way to present these epics in a manner that feels relevant, accessible and engaging without compromising on the essence that has kept these stories alive for centuries.

The Enduring Power of Epics
What draws me to the epics—the Mahabharata, the Ramayana and the Bhagavad Gita—is their universality. These stories transcend history, reflecting our collective human journey with themes of struggle, triumph, values and failings. Lord Krishna’s teachings in the Bhagavad Gita, Arjuna’s inner conflict and Lord Ram’s devotion remain as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago.

As a storyteller, I believe these timeless themes must be carried forward with respect and care to resonate with each new generation. Equally important is presenting them in a way that connects with the world young viewers navigate today.

Bridging the Past and the Present
One of the greatest joys of retelling these stories is the opportunity to honour their rich traditions while utilising modern storytelling tools. Technology, through visuals, music and innovative narratives, allows us to bring epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana to life in ways previously unimaginable. However, while tools like CGI and sound design enhance the storytelling experience, they are secondary to the heart of the narrative.

For me, storytelling is about forging a deep emotional connection with the audience, enabling them to see their struggles and triumphs mirrored in these timeless characters. Special effects may captivate, but it is the emotional depth and timeless themes that ensure these stories remain powerful and relevant.

The Expanding Horizon: Television and Beyond
We have expanded our journey from television to now encompass digital platforms, live events, music and even interactive experiences. This is an incredibly exciting development, one that I never anticipated when I first began. But as storytelling has expanded, so has its ability to reach more people in different ways.
I have come to realise that storytelling isn’t confined to just one format. It’s about creating an ecosystem where these stories can live and breathe across multiple touch points—whether through a social media post, a live event, a digital platform, or a series.

Embracing Technology, Honoring Tradition
Technology has revolutionised the way we bring epic stories to life, with CGI, animation and visual effects allowing us to depict grand battles and divine interventions like never before. However, these tools should always serve the story, not overshadow it. The true power of these epics lies in their universal themes and profound teachings. As I work to expand their reach into new formats, I remind myself that technology is a bridge to connect with the audience, helping them understand the beauty and relevance of these ancient teachings while keeping the soul of the story intact.

Looking Ahead: A Humble Path Forward
Looking ahead, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities that have come my way and for the incredible team of talented individuals who have made it all possible. The journey of telling these stories has been as much about learning as it has been about creating. Every project, every episode and every story is an opportunity to grow and deepen my understanding of these teachings.

This is a journey I am proud to be on and one that I know is only just beginning. There’s still so much to do—so many more stories to tell, more lessons to share, and more ways to engage with a global audience.

It’s been an incredible ride so far, and I look forward to continuing this journey of sharing, growing, and connecting with the stories that shape our lives. I’m grateful to be a part of this legacy, and I keep believing in the path ahead.
