'TRUTH IS SIMPLE: A PRODUCT DELIVERS VALUE ONLY WHEN USED CORRECTLY'

'TRUTH IS SIMPLE: A PRODUCT DELIVERS VALUE ONLY WHEN USED CORRECTLY'

Robert Rose, one of the world’s most influential figures in modern marketing strategy, said, and I quote: “Marketing is telling the world you’re a rock star. Content marketing is showing the world you are one.” I genuinely feel that this has never been more relevant than it is today. Consumers today don’t want to be convinced. They want to verify. They want to see whether a product actually works. They want to understand its quality before they make a decision. Reviews matter. Comparisons matter. Sustainability matters. They are no longer falling for surface-level messaging. They are asking sharper questions. They want to know the pros, the cons, and the real performance. In simple terms, the consumer has become more informed, more aware, and far more decisive.

For manufacturers, this changes the role of communication completely. It is no longer enough to claim quality. We have to demonstrate it. We have to show how the product performs in real conditions, and the way consumers choose to consume this information has also evolved. The television, which once defined collective consumption, has been replaced by the smartphone. Content today is personal, on-demand, and continuous. People are not sitting down to watch. They are scrolling. This is where short-form video and DIY-style content have emerged as powerful tools. The shift is clear: people would rather watch than read.

The data supports this. Wyzowl’s 2026 Video Marketing Report highlights that 78 per cent of people prefer to learn about a product or service through short videos. Research by Wistia (2025) shows that videos under one minute generate significantly higher engagement, while text-heavy formats often lose attention within seconds. Nearly 80 per of consumers would rather watch a one-minute demonstration than go through a manual. The facts are undeniable here. We are operating in what can only be described as a post-text consumption environment. That’s why the manufacturing landscape is also undergoing a structural shift. We are moving away from static brochures towards what I would define as instruction-led communication.

You can see this clearly in how companies like Siemens and Bosch operate today. They are not simplifying their products. They are simplifying understanding. Engineers explain systems. Technicians demonstrate usage. Processes are shown as they are. That shift is important. Because in manufacturing, clarity builds trust. And trust builds authority. These brands are not just selling machines or tools. They are demonstrating the expertise required to use them correctly. That is where real value lies.

For manufacturers, this is the new benchmark: moving from being a supplier in the background to becoming an educator in the ecosystem. In building materials, this evolution is even more relevant. What earlier looked like DIY content has now become application-driven storytelling. Brands like Saint-Gobain, Caterpillar, Asian Paints have understood this well. Their content does not stop at product features. It focuses on application, installation, and performance in real conditions.

Because the truth is simple. A product delivers value only when it is used correctly. This is a direction we strongly believe in. When we share site-level insights about what to do and what to avoid, we are not just communicating. We are enabling better outcomes, and that matters equally to a homeowner and a contractor. The objective is clear. The brand should not be limited to a showroom. It should be present where the material is actually being used.

The Road Ahead
Going forward, I believe the strongest brands will be built on what I call unfiltered expertise. The brochure-led approach will not disappear, but it will not lead. What will lead is content that is real, useful, and rooted in application. Formats like short videos are effective because they reduce the gap between seeing and doing. They move the consumer from awareness to action.
We have already seen this work globally. Home Depot has built an entire ecosystem around how-to content. 3M has done the same with problem-solving guides. For manufacturers, this opens up a clear opportunity: to create a repository of knowledge that continues to add value over time. It could be a 30-second boiling water test, or a deeper explanation of material strength. The format can change. The intent cannot. The intent is to provide proof. Consistently. Because in today’s environment, proof is not a campaign. It is a service.

At CenturyPly, our shift towards video is not driven by trends. It is driven by how decisions are being made today. We are not just shifting to short videos because they are popular. We are doing it because it is how the modern consumer seeks and verifies truth. I genuinely feel, if the product is strong, it will be seen. If the process is solid, it should be shown. We believe in that transparency, and we are building our communication around it.
