Keeping up with Kamiya

Everyone has been obsessed with her content and her curls! And we asked Kamiya Jani, Chief Travelling Officer & Founder, Curly Tales, about both

Keeping up with Kamiya

Q] Kamiya, as someone with experience as a TV anchor, where do you feel you gained more recognition—on television or through social media? And if given the opportunity, would you consider returning to anchoring?
I spent about 10 years in television and six years in social media, and I feel that a significant amount of the fame I’ve gained, though not all of it, has come from social media. It’s the medium that most people are deeply engaged with nowadays. People spend more time on their phones than watching television, so I prefer to be on the platform that’s more popular. At the same time, a lot of social media content is now being consumed on TV, so it feels like a win-win situation.

Q] With so many travel stories under your belt, which is one underrated lesson that travel has taught you?
One lesson that often goes unnoticed—though I believe no lesson is truly underrated—is what travel teaches me. It reminds me to be an observer, to simply watch the flow of life without trying to control it too much. When you’re travelling to new places, you never know what the next moment will bring. In those moments, you naturally surrender and become open to the experiences around you. This is so different from daily life, where you’re constantly trying to manage and control everything. Travel, for me, is a reminder to let go and enjoy the ride.

Q] You were one of the first to embrace your curly hair in the public forum, and over time, you’ve come to define what it means to be a curly-haired woman in India. How does that make you feel?
Isn’t it amazing? How can someone be defined solely by their hair? I even named my platform after mine. Back when I worked as a television news anchor, I noticed that it’s rather rare to see a presenter with curly hair. Most of them have sleek, straight hair and look stunning. I tried straightening my hair for a few shows, but eventually I embraced my naturally curly hair—it felt more authentic. Interestingly, the first thing people often ask me about is my hair. Is it natural? How do you get it so curly? That made me realise this is a distinctive feature God has blessed me with, so why not make the most of it?

Q] You have been interviewing several politicians lately, a space traditionally dominated by journalists. Do you think this sector is now opening up to influencers as well?
I believe the world of influencers, social media, and digital content creation is becoming increasingly accessible—not just for politicians but for everyone, whether it’s corporations, Bollywood, musicians, or artists. Everyone wants to have a presence on social media. It’s no longer confined to one specific field; people from all walks of life recognise the value of being active on these platforms. They understand that social media offers greater visibility and a wider reach, which is why they’re collaborating with content creators like me.

Q] From food, travel, political interviews, to real estate promotions, you have done it all! Is there any beat that you haven’t explored yet that you’d like to explore in the future?
The world truly feels like an open playground with endless possibilities, and there’s always more to explore. However, one show I’m particularly proud of is Sandese Aate Hai, a project I worked on in collaboration with the Indian Army. For this show, I visited the Indian borders—whether it was the Indo-China or Indo-Pakistan border—met the soldiers, and experienced their lives firsthand. It was a deeply fulfilling experience and one that I feel honoured to have been part of as a social media content creator. While I’m grateful for that opportunity, there’s still so much more to do. I aspire to visit the villages of India, uncovering the incredible stories emerging from Bharat—stories from remote and often overlooked pockets of the country. That’s where I hope to focus my efforts in the days to come.
