Indian cricketer and captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders, Ajinkya Rahane, has been inducted into the Rainforest Alliance’s global Ambassador Program, becoming the first professional athlete ever to do so.
The Rainforest Alliance Ambassador Program is a global initiative that brings together diverse, influential figures who advocate for sustainability, environmental protection, and social equity. Currently comprising about 20 ambassadors from around the world, the programme has now welcomed its first sportsperson in Rahane.
Rahane’s involvement stems from his deep-rooted commitment to sustainable agriculture, reflected in his ongoing efforts with farming communities in Maharashtra. As an ambassador, he aims to raise awareness on issues of sustainability, conservation, and responsible consumer behaviour.
His role is seen as a significant move towards bridging the worlds of sport and sustainability in India, encouraging fans and the wider public to adopt environmentally conscious habits.
Rainforest Alliance CEO Santiago Gowland said, “Ajinkya is a stellar example of someone who is passionate about building a better world for his children, and for generations to come. His dedication to our alliance shows how individual passion can kickstart the urgent, transformative work needed to protect our planet's precious resources. Happy to have him on board.”
Speaking on his appointment, Rahane said, “I am very happy to have been onboarded as an ambassador with the Rainforest Alliance. Agriculture is my passion and through my partnership with Rainforest Alliance, I am hoping to contribute my bit to promote sustainability and help the farming community.”
The Rainforest Alliance continues to work across the globe to protect forests, promote sustainable agriculture, and partner with local communities. Rahane’s appointment is expected to catalyse important conversations around sustainability in India and encourage grassroots engagement.
