Conventional Bollywood star, Nana Patekar died today, at the age of 75, leaving behind a career that not only evolved around cinema but around iconic advertisements, where his intensified performance, comic timing, and the humourous activities made it remarkable.
Apart from Hindi and Marathi cinemas, like Parinda, Agni Sakshi, Welcome, Rajneeti, Tirangaa, he got featured in advertisements like Vikram Lion tea’s (2018), Jar App campaign, Tata Sky’s Maharashtra regional campaign, Uttar Pradesh Police public-awareness film and much more.
One of his iconic ads is the Jar App campaign, where he reprised his Welcome character Uday Shetty, turning the brand’s catchphrase into ‘Control…CONTROL’, designing the film to match the Fintech firm’s idea of saving.
The 2018, Vikram Lion Tea’s television commercial is another unique example of this ad career. In the film, Patekar played a seemingly ordinary, older man confronted by a group of arrogant bikers. After taking a sip of a strong tea, he delivered the catch line, ‘Baap ko bhej, tere bas ki baat nahi.’
The most recent of his ads include the Uttar Pradesh Police public-awareness film addressing digital arrest scams, again drawing on his intense screen persona to communicate a serious message.
Patekar’s persona, voice, style and every movement gave the audience an instant resonance and the brand the equity they need for the products.
He won many awards including National Film Awards, and Padma Shri in 2013.
