Elizabeth Rutledge to retire as American Express Global CMO in March 2027 after 37 years

Elizabeth Rutledge, the Chief Marketing Officer at American Express, has announced her retirement after a 37-year career with the financial services giant. She will officially step down in March 2027.

Announcing her departure on LinkedIn, Rutledge reflected on her nearly four-decade journey with the brand. "Almost 37 years ago, I walked into the American Express Tower in New York City to fulfill a dream: to work for a company known for its iconic brand, marketing prowess, and extraordinary people," she stated. "In March 2027, I'll walk out of that same tower, over three decades later, having fulfilled that dream and so, so much more."

Rutledge, who assumed the global CMO position in February 2018, leaves behind a legacy of transforming a heritage financial institution into a highly visible cultural brand. During her tenure at the marketing helm, American Express successfully navigated a generational shift, actively pursuing Millennial and Gen Z consumers through high-impact experiential marketing, premium dining integrations, and strategic global sponsorships, including its recent expansion with Formula 1.

Her strategy focused on shifting American Express away from purely transactional messaging and positioning it as a brand that supports consumers across premium lifestyle sectors. Her remit grew to oversee the brand’s global media, communications, sponsorships, strategic brand planning, and customer insights.

Expressing gratitude to her team in her announcement, Rutledge wrote, "As I reflect on this incredible journey, I’m filled with gratitude for #TeamAmex. For me, it has always been, and always will be, about the people. To my Amex colleagues, past and present, thank you for your partnership, friendship and unwavering commitment to powerfully backing our customers and for being with me on this incredible journey."

Rutledge noted that she is excited for her next chapter as an 'Amex alum' and to spend more time with her family and friends. However, she emphasized her commitment to managing a smooth leadership transition over the next several months.

"There’s still important work ahead and I look forward to spending the coming months supporting our colleagues, customers, and our next generation of leaders," she added.

Beyond her immediate commercial remit, Rutledge has been a prominent voice for diversity and inclusion within the advertising industry, regularly featuring on global lists of the most influential marketing executives and serving on the boards of the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) and the Ad Council.

American Express has not yet formally announced a successor for the global CMO position. The incoming marketing chief will inherit a brand that has successfully bridged the gap between traditional financial trust and modern cultural relevance, just as the industry shifts towards an increasingly digital and AI-driven consumer marketing landscape.
