Garnier has announced a partnership with the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban to support plastic waste reduction through the promotion of recycling and reuse. The initiative includes collaboration on 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' (RRR) Centres, which collect recyclable materials.
This step is part of Garnier’s Green Beauty programme, which includes efforts to collect plastic waste across India in association with Plastics for Change. The brand encourages consumers to take “One Green Step” towards improved environmental practices.
Ms. Roopa Mishra, Joint Secretary and National Mission Director, Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MOHUA), said, “We are happy to partner with Garnier in our collective effort to reduce plastic waste and promote better waste management practices across the country. This partnership exemplifies the power to drive change through strong collaborations between government initiatives and the private sector.”
The partnership began with beach clean-up drives in multiple cities, including Mumbai, Chennai, Vizag, Pondicherry, Puri, Goa, Mangalore, and Kasargod. Garnier’s brand ambassador John Abraham participated in the Chennai event alongside student volunteers.
"I'm honoured to support Garnier's commitment to Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban and work towards the vision of building clean, green and litter free cities," said John Abraham. "Through individual and collective day to day action such as segregating our waste, recycling and reusing items, we can build a cleaner India. I'm excited to contribute to this important initiative. Together, let’s take one green step every day towards building a cleaner India."
Since 2020, Garnier has worked with Plastics for Change to collect and recycle plastic. The initiative has also aimed to support informal waste collectors and their families through stable income opportunities. In November 2022, Garnier opened its first plastic waste collection centre in Chennai and has since established plastic collection kiosks in 20 locations across Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi. The brand reports that around 900 tonnes of plastic have been collected to date, with a target of 1,000 tonnes for 2025.
Approximately 15,000 individuals have reportedly benefited from this programme through access to financial services, housing, education, and healthcare.
Ajay Simha, General Manager, Garnier India, said, “At Garnier, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Our Green Beauty initiative is designed to bring about real change, and our collaboration with the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban is a key part of that commitment. By encouraging consumers to take One Green Step towards sustainability, we are actively reducing ocean-bound plastic waste and creating a positive impact on the environment. Through our partnership with Plastics for Change and now, the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, we not only reinforce Garnier’s role as a leader in sustainable beauty, but also empower communities to make a tangible difference in the fight against plastic pollution.”
