Google has rolled out a new feature for its Gemini chatbot called Temporary Chats, aimed at providing users with greater privacy by automatically deleting conversations after 72 hours.
Announced in August, the feature is now available on the mobile app and selected web clients. Temporary Chats allow users to hold one-off conversations that are not saved or visible in Recent Chats or Gemini Apps Activity. Once closed, these chats cannot be retrieved.
According to Google, “Temporary Chats are not used to train AI models or customize responses.” During such sessions, Gemini generates generic replies, similar to interactions without user preferences enabled.
The feature is designed for users who prefer privacy, but it comes with limitations. In Temporary Chat mode, users cannot provide feedback on responses or save conversations for future reference.
How to Use Temporary Chats on Gemini
- Ensure the latest version of the Gemini app is installed.
- Open the app and tap the menu icon in the top left corner.
- Select the “Temporary Chat” option next to “New Chat.”
- Tap the chat bubble icon to start a conversation that will automatically end in 72 hours.
The update was released alongside Personal Context mode, which functions differently by allowing Gemini to access past conversations to tailor answers and suggestions.
Temporary Chats offer an alternative for users who do not wish to store any data. Google states the update reflects an effort to give users more control over their interactions with the assistant.
