Actor Huma Qureshi has partnered with Indian handloom label Dressfolk to launch Freefall, a new saree brand focused on placing the woman, rather than the occasion, at the centre of its design. The collection brings together handwoven textiles from Chanderi, Varanasi and Kutch, with each saree developed in collaboration with master artisans and taking more than 50 hours to create.
“For me, the saree has always represented something much deeper than occasion or tradition. It carries history, craft and individuality, and yet it has the ability to feel completely personal. With Freefall, I wanted to explore that space where heritage meets the way we live today. The intention was to create sarees that feel effortless and contemporary while still retaining the soul of the craft behind them. Ultimately, it is about feeling like yourself in what you wear,” said Huma Qureshi.
For Dressfolk, the collaboration builds on its larger philosophy around the future of Indian handloom. Nitin Mehrotra, Founder, Dressfolk, said, “Indian craft does not need to be preserved by keeping it untouched or confined to the past; it needs to thrive by finding a meaningful place in the present. Freefall is an expression of that belief, bringing together the authenticity and skill embedded in India’s textile traditions with a design sensibility that feels modern, considered and easy to engage with. Working with master artisans across Chanderi, Varanasi and Kutch, we have created a collection that respects the depth of the craft while placing it in a context relevant to how people dress today. The intent was never to dilute the craft, but to create the right context for it to be discovered and appreciated by a wider audience.”
Freefall draws on Qureshi’s personal relationship with the saree, alongside Dressfolk’s experience working with India’s weaving communities. The collaboration brings together traditional craft and contemporary design, with the collection shaped around individual expression and the wearer.
