Luminous Power Technologies has launched ‘Alo’r Alpona’, a Durga Puja activation in Kolkata that combines traditional Bengali floor art with a glow-in-the-dark installation inspired by solar energy.
The installation features an alpona, an intricate design traditionally created to welcome Maa Durga, made using a special pigment that absorbs sunlight during the day and glows at night. Luminous solar panels have been placed alongside the artwork, which is designed to illuminate without wires or electricity.
The activation aims to bring greater visibility to alpona designs after sunset, when illuminated pandals and festive crowds often draw attention away from the traditional artwork. Set against the backdrop of a Durga Puja pandal, the installation uses the glow-in-the-dark design to demonstrate a creative application of solar energy beyond conventional settings such as rooftops.
Neelima Burra, SVP – Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer, Luminous Power Technologies, said, “Maa Durga embodies Shakti—the strength to overcome darkness, the courage to drive change, and the power to inspire. Solar energy carries a similar promise, transforming the sun's power into possibilities for a brighter future. At Luminous, we believe solar energy can go beyond conventional applications to create new and meaningful experiences. With Alo’r Alpona, we have brought this belief to life by reimagining Bengal’s traditional alpona as an artistic expression that glows after dark. This Durga Puja campaign celebrates Bengal’s rich cultural heritage while inviting people to discover the possibilities of solar energy through a fresh and inspiring perspective.”
The campaign film documents the creation of the alpona, following artists as they paint the design and capturing the reactions of Puja-goers as it begins to glow after sunset. The film shows how the illuminated artwork draws attention on the streets alongside the festival’s larger visual displays.
Through the initiative, Luminous Solar aims to build awareness of sustainable energy by connecting it with local cultural traditions. The campaign also reflects the company’s broader efforts to encourage people to explore solar energy beyond its conventional applications.
