OpenAI has appointed Michael Tabtabai as its first Global Vice-President of Creative. The new role is part of the company’s efforts to expand its global marketing operations amid increasing competition in the generative AI sector.
Tabtabai began in the role in late August and will report to Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch, who is expected to return from medical leave this autumn. Both previously worked together at Coinbase, where they led several campaigns, including the 2022 Super Bowl advertisement featuring a bouncing QR code.
At OpenAI, Tabtabai will work with the in-house studio led by Executive Creative Director Zach Stubenvoll. The company is looking to develop its creative approach as usage of ChatGPT surpasses 700 million weekly active users.
Tabtabai joins from Coinbase, where he was VP Creative for over three years. His earlier roles include positions at Google, Wieden+Kennedy, and Crispin Porter + Bogusky, working across technology and consumer brand campaigns.
The appointment is part of OpenAI’s efforts to focus on global storytelling and communication of generative AI’s potential.
