Nataraj has launched a new campaign for its Gelix Waterproof Gel Pen, built around an everyday parenting insight: when choosing a child’s everyday pen, parents may not always consider what the child actually needs from it.
The campaign film brings this insight to life through an entertaining detective story, in which two young detectives investigate the mysterious case of a child’s ruined homework. When a glass of water spills over the homework and the writing smudges, they identify the culprit as the parents’ choice of a regular gel pen instead of one with waterproof ink. The detectives then reveal the Nataraj Gelix Waterproof Gel Pen, which combines smooth writing with waterproof ink and is priced at an MRP of ₹6.
The campaign draws on the idea that some of the products children use most frequently are also those parents may think about the least. While school bags, shoes and bottles are often considered carefully, a child’s pen can become an automatic purchase. The campaign uses a familiar mishap to encourage parents to reconsider that choice through entertainment rather than instruction.
Commenting on the campaign, Aishwarya Shinod, Chief Marketing Officer, Hindustan Pencils Pvt. Ltd., said, “We often think deeply about the big things we buy for our children, but some of the products they use every single day become almost invisible to us. A pen is one such product. Parents may not consciously think about what their child’s first everyday pen needs to deliver until something goes wrong like a simple spill ruining hours of homework. That overlooked moment became the starting point for our Gelix campaign. We wanted to make parents pause and rethink a very small choice, while demonstrating a very relevant product benefit. Waterproof ink is not something you necessarily think about when buying a pen; you understand its value when you need it. The detective story allowed us to dramatise that insight in a way that is engaging, memorable and easy for both children and parents to relate to. For Nataraj, this is also about our larger belief in the power of insight-led storytelling. We want to build brands by understanding real moments in consumers’ lives and turning those moments into simple, entertaining stories not simply by talking about product features.”
The campaign is being rolled out across digital and social media platforms during the ongoing academic season, targeting students, parents and the wider school stationery market.
