Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Maruti Suzuki’s new electric vehicle and battery manufacturing plant at Hansalpur, Gujarat.
The facility will produce Maruti Suzuki’s first electric SUV, the e-Vitara, which will be sold in India and exported to over 100 countries, including Japan and Europe.
Along with cars, the plant will also manufacture battery electrodes, which is an important part of electric and hybrid vehicle batteries. This means a large portion of the battery’s value will now be made in India, reducing dependence on imports.
Speaking at the event, PM Modi said the project supports India’s goals of becoming self-reliant (Aatmanirbhar Bharat) and a global hub for clean mobility. He added that such initiatives would boost green transport, sustainable growth, and new jobs.
Maruti Suzuki officials said the Hansalpur plant is part of Suzuki Motor Corporation’s plan to invest heavily in India over the next few years to strengthen the country’s EV ecosystem.
