The World Pickleball League (WPBL) has officially launched Pune United, a dynamic new franchise representing the city in the league. Backed by a star-studded consortium, the team is owned by Bollywood actors Riteish and Genelia Deshmukh, corporate leaders Sudhir and Sunanda Mehta from EKA Mobility and Pinnacle Industries, and educational visionaries Ajeenkya D Y Patil and Pooja Patil of Ajeenkya DY Patil University.
Riteish Deshmukh expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting the rapid rise of pickleball as the world’s fastest-growing sport. “Pickleball’s popularity knows no bounds. It has become a favourite across all age groups. We are thrilled to be part of the World Pickleball League and excited to take Pune United to new heights, inspiring people to embrace a healthier lifestyle while enjoying the game,” he said.
His wife, Genelia Deshmukh, shared her excitement for the league's potential to unite communities. “Pickleball has the power to bring people together. Our mission with Pune United is to foster camaraderie, wellness, and fun, enriching the lives of families and communities,” she said.
Dr. Sudhir Mehta, Founder & Chairman of EKA Mobility and Pinnacle Industries, spoke about Pune’s potential to host a global sports franchise: “Pune is a thriving, youthful city, and pickleball is the perfect sport for today’s active and vibrant population. We want to nurture local talent while also promoting Pune as a hub for innovation, fitness, and community.”
Ajeenkya D Y Patil, Founder-President of Ajeenkya DY Patil University, expressed the team’s broader vision: “Pune United represents the city’s potential, rich culture, and innovative energy. We hope to connect people of all ages through the engaging sport of pickleball.”

The World Pickleball League will begin its season on January 24, 2025, and Pune United is poised to bring the joy, fitness, and inclusivity of pickleball to millions across the city and beyond.
