As Women's Day arrives each year, we celebrate the strides toward equality. However, the deep-rooted gender biases that shape society still persist. This year, Shemaroo Entertainment goes beyond mere conversation, launching the #HarRoleIsHerRole campaign to address how we perceive ambition, opportunity, and representation.
For years, Shemaroo Entertainment has used storytelling to impact society, and through this initiative, they hold up a mirror to the subtle biases we often overlook, ensuring equality is visibly reflected in everyday life.
A key part of the campaign involved a social experiment with 10 artists. Each artist was asked to paint portraits of professionals from various fields—such as chefs, cricketers, scientists, army officers, wrestlers, tailors, doctors, pilots, and firefighters. The outcome? All the artists unconsciously painted men, highlighting how ingrained gender biases are in our thinking.
Arghya Chakravarty, Chief Operating Officer at Shemaroo Entertainment Ltd, stressed the importance of industries taking action beyond words. "We recognize the power of media in shaping perspectives and driving change. With #HarRoleIsHerRole, we are not just starting a conversation—we are taking action. Equality isn’t just about opportunity; it’s about visibility. By challenging outdated norms and promoting balanced representation, we ensure that talent and ambition—not gender—define success. This commitment extends beyond our content to our own organization, where we foster inclusivity, champion equal opportunities, and cultivate diverse leadership. Real change begins with what we showcase, what we teach, and how we lead every day."
Shemaroo Entertainment also pointed out that even occupational charts in schools, which shape young minds, often reinforce these stereotypes by depicting men in leadership roles while relegating women to professions like teacher or nurse. With #HarRoleIsHerRole, Shemaroo aims to rewrite this narrative. The company is redesigning the occupations chart to ensure equal representation of both genders across various professions, which will be distributed to schools and NGOs to create awareness from the ground up.
Anuja Trivedi, Chief Marketing Officer at Shemaroo Entertainment, shared the brand’s broader vision: "At Shemaroo Entertainment, we’ve always believed in the power of stories to inspire change. #HarRoleIsHerRole is more than just a movement; it’s a shift in mindset. By bringing this initiative to life, we aim to shape a generation that grows up seeing the world differently—free from the biases that have held us back for far too long. True change begins with how we see the world, and we are committed to making that vision more inclusive, more equal, and more powerful."
This Women's Day, Shemaroo Entertainment invites people to reflect, rethink, and reimagine a world where every role is for everyone. When dreams are no longer incomplete, India smiles—and standing by its ethos "India Khush Hua", Shemaroo remains dedicated to keeping India smiling.
