From 30-Second Spots to Story Universes: The AI Shift in Brand Building

Dipankar Mukherjee, Co-Founder & CEO, Studio Blo, writes about why AI's biggest impact on advertising isn't faster production, but empowering brands to build enduring story worlds

From 30-Second Spots to Story Universes: The AI Shift in Brand Building

Let me tell you what most AI brand films look like right now. Beautiful. And completely empty. A product floating in a gorgeously rendered world, lit like a prestige drama, scored like an emotion is happening somewhere nearby. And then nothing. Because the technology arrived and the idea did not.

This is where most of the industry is stuck. Upgrading the execution while leaving the thinking exactly where it was.

The transformation AI is enabling in brand storytelling is not about better production. It is about a fundamentally different relationship with narrative. For decades, brands have thought in campaigns because that was all the economics allowed. One hero film. One launch moment. One big media push. Everything compressed into thirty seconds because thirty seconds was what you could afford to make and what you could afford to place. The spot was never the ideal format. It was the affordable format. Somewhere along the way, brands mistook that constraint for the craft.

AI removes the constraint. That should change everything about how brands think. Not cheaper campaigns, but bigger ambitions. Story infrastructure that builds over time instead of expiring with the media plan. Worlds, not moments.

India, of all places, should already know how this works. Fevicol never ran a product campaign in its life. Every film Ogilvy made for them was complete enough to exist without the brand in it. A truck overloaded with people on its roof. A fish refusing to take the bait. An old man so attached to his chair that he gets carried out on it at his own funeral. You remember these stories first and the brand second. That is a philosophy, not an accident. Asian Paints held an entire emotional territory around belonging and home for so long that the brand stopped being paint and became the feeling of a space that is yours. Nobody called it world-building at the time. That is exactly what it was.

AI now makes that level of ambition available to every brand. The problem is that most brands are using it to make prettier product shots. And the environment they are making content for has never been less forgiving of that kind of lazy thinking.

The algorithm does not care about your brand equity or what you spent to get here. You are discovered because someone found you interesting for three seconds on a Wednesday afternoon, somewhere between a stand-up clip and a cricket highlight. That is the gatekeeper now. Not reach, not recall, not whatever your brand tracker is measuring this quarter. Three seconds of genuine interest from someone who had a hundred other things to watch and still chose to stay. Your branded content is not competing with your category competitor's TVC anymore. It is up against every Reels spiral, every Shorts rabbit hole, every episode of something brilliant waiting just one tap away. The audience has infinite options and zero obligation. If your story does not earn its place on its own merit, no media budget in the world will save it.

We are currently working with a leading brand to build something that did not have a name until recently. A storyverse. Feature films, short films, original music, and a continuing cast of characters that audiences can follow, invest in, and return to. With A-grade screenwriters, directors, and cinematographers, the quality bar is exactly where it needs to be to compete in open culture, not just in brand communications. Six feature films are already ready to live on their own app. And the part that should make every CMO stop and think—we are doing all of this in a few months. The entire roster, built and delivered in the time most brands spend approving a single script. The budget is possibly a little more than what this brand would have spent in a year on conventional advertising films. Except instead of buying borrowed attention, they now own their own IP. They stopped trying to force audiences to watch their ads. They decided to build something audiences would actually choose to watch.

That is the distinction the industry keeps missing. AI gives you the tools to build at a scale that was previously out of reach. It does not give you a reason to build. It does not tell you what your brand believes or what kind of world it wants to create. That thinking is still entirely human. And now that everyone can produce cinematic content, the only thing that separates a brand that matters from one that disappears into the feed is whether the story is actually worth something.

The new creative document is not a brief. It is a bible. A world with its own rules, characters, emotional texture, and a genuine reason to return to. A brief asks what you want to say. A bible asks what kind of world you are building and whether anyone would want to live in it.

The 30-second spot is losing its place not because attention spans got shorter. That is the lazy diagnosis. It is losing because brands finally have the tools to hold attention for longer, across more surfaces, and with more depth than sixty seconds of film ever allowed.

What is your world? And do you have the imagination to build it?
