Mattel, Inc. has announced the release of the first Barbie® Inspiring Women doll in India, featuring American tennis player Venus Williams. The launch marks the introduction of the global Inspiring Women Series to the Indian market.
The series recognises women who have made significant contributions across various fields. Venus Williams, a Grand Slam winner and advocate for gender pay equity in sports, is the latest figure to be included.
The Venus Williams doll is styled in the white tennis outfit worn during her 2007 Grand Slam win, a moment that coincided with her campaign for equal prize money in professional tennis. The doll also includes accessories from that match, such as a green gem necklace, wristband, visor, tennis racket, and ball.
“Barbie proudly welcomes tennis legend Venus Williams to our Inspiring Women series. A trailblazer both on and off the court, Venus has redefined what it means to be a champion, not just through her Grand Slam titles, but through her fearless advocacy for pay equity. Her unwavering fight for equal prize money in professional tennis forever changed the game, paving the way for future generations to dream bigger. Venus is a shining example of courage, resilience, and empowerment, and we are honoured to celebrate her remarkable legacy,” said Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls, Mattel.
Williams collaborated with the Barbie design team to ensure the doll reflects her appearance and style.
“Growing up, I was taught early on that anything is possible with hard work and perseverance. That belief has guided me to break barriers and use my platform to champion causes like equal pay – not just for myself, but for those who come after me. Being honoured as a Barbie Inspiring Woman is incredibly special. I hope this doll encourages young people to dream big, know their worth, and pursue their goals with confidence and heart," said Venus Williams.
The launch is part of Barbie’s ongoing initiative to highlight women whose work has had a lasting impact.
