Prabhjeet Singh, former President of Uber India and South Asia, has joined OpenAI as Managing Director for India. In his new role, Singh will oversee the company’s consumer and enterprise businesses, partnerships, regulatory engagement and overall operations in India. He will report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific.
This appointment comes on the day same as OpenAI rolls out ChatGPT Ads in India, introducing clearly labelled sponsored recommendations for Free and Go users while maintaining that chats remain private and do not influence AI responses.
In a LinkedIn post, Singh said, "Last week, I joined OpenAI to lead the India business. After a week in San Francisco meeting the team, I’m back home inspired about the mission and the path ahead. I love building and scaling new businesses: taking an ambitious idea, turning it into something people value, and building the teams and systems that help it reach millions. Few opportunities feel as consequential as helping shape what AI can mean for India, and what India can mean for AI".
"India has the talent, entrepreneurial energy and ambition. Few markets offer this combination of scale and possibility. But India should not only benefit from the future of AI. India should help build it. And what gets built here should shape how AI is used everywhere. That is a big part of why I joined OpenAI. The path to OpenAI's vision of using AGI to benefit all of humanity goes through India. Lots to learn. Lots to build. Let’s get going", the post added.
OpenAI said Singh’s mandate will include expanding strategic partnerships, supporting India’s AI ecosystem and accelerating AI adoption across businesses, institutions and the public sector. His appointment comes as OpenAI continues to deepen its presence in India and expand the adoption of AI across key sectors.
