Homegrown sneaker label Comet has launched Maachis, a sneaker that is inspired by the visual language of vintage Indian matchboxes. Crafted from luxurious beige suede, Maachis pays homage to classic matchbox labels, with elements designed to evoke nostalgia with a fresh twist.
But what truly stands out in the sneaker lies beneath the heel tab. Flipping the heel tab unveils a fully functional striker strip, which can light a matchstick. According to the brand, the idea taps into the cinematic thrill of striking a matchstick against a boot, seen in classic Western films and, more recently, in Bollywood film Dhurandhar, when Ranveer Singh lights a matchstick with his shoe.

The launch is supported by a campaign which amplifies the innovation with a bold reveal: lift the heel tab, strike a matchstick, and witness the sneaker spark curiosity and conversation.
Commenting on the launch, Utkarsh Gupta, Co-founder, Comet said, "The artwork on a Maachis is beautiful. It's something so familiar, yet full of character and nostalgia. With Maachis, we wanted to reinterpret that everyday object in a way that feels playful, nostalgic, and completely unexpected. Every detail, from the vintage-inspired graphics to the life-sized matchbox packaging and the functional striker strip, was designed to create moments of discovery. It's a sneaker that tells a story, starts conversations, and invites people to experience design beyond aesthetics.”
