Meta has introduced a new generative AI video editing feature across the Meta AI app, the Meta.AI website, and the Edits app. The tool allows users to edit short-form videos using preset AI prompts that can change outfits, locations, styles and more. It is currently available in the US and more than a dozen other countries.
The new feature, based on Meta’s Movie Gen models, enables users to upload a video and apply one of over 50 preset prompts to transform up to 10 seconds of footage. For a limited time, this functionality is available at no cost.
Meta AI processes the selected prompt and edits the video accordingly. For example, a user can apply a comic book effect, simulate a dreamy atmosphere by changing lighting, or add elements like battle clothing and fluorescent effects to make the video resemble a video game.
Videos edited using the Meta AI app and Edits can be shared directly to Facebook and Instagram. On the Meta.AI website and app, users can post their content to the Discover feed.
Meta says the tool is designed to allow users without editing experience to modify videos. It is intended for both casual users and content creators. The company collaborated with creators during development to ensure the prompts would be relevant to audiences.
“This new feature is just the first step toward our goal of bringing you AI video generation and editing across our apps and products,” Meta said. “Later this year, you’ll be able to edit videos alongside Meta AI with your own text prompts to make your video edits exactly as you imagine them.”
The release is part of Meta’s broader AI development strategy. In 2022, Meta launched the Make-A-Scene models, which allowed image, audio, video and 3D animation generation. These were followed by diffusion-based Llama Image foundation models, which enabled instruction-based editing. Last year, Meta introduced Movie Gen, a model capable of generating and editing video and sound using text instructions.
Meta stated, “We built this feature so that everyone can experiment creatively and make fun, interesting videos to share with their friends, family and followers. Whether you’re reimagining a favourite family memory or finding new ways to entertain your audience, our video editing feature can help.”
The company has indicated it will continue developing video generation and editing features across its platforms.
