The Nuts and Dry Fruits Council (India) [NDFC(I)] has launched #SwapTheSweet, a campaign encouraging households to make more mindful food choices during the festive season by incorporating nuts and dry fruits in place of sugar-heavy treats.
The initiative comes as India celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi and prepares for Navratri, amid wider conversations around reducing sugar intake. Built around the philosophy of “NUTS. NUTRITION. NATION.”, the campaign seeks to bring healthier eating choices into festive celebrations without moving away from the flavours, memories and traditions associated with them.
“Indian festivals have never needed more sweetness, they've always had plenty. What we're rethinking is where that sweetness comes from. Less sugar this year. More nuts and dry fruits,” said Mr. Rajeev Pabreja, Treasurer and Mewa Chair at NDFC(I).
Rather than asking consumers to give up traditional sweets, #SwapTheSweet encourages small changes in ingredients and preparation. These include reducing added sugar in homemade laddoos and barfis, adding nuts to traditional recipes, replacing heavily sweetened snacks with roasted nuts and opting for thoughtfully assembled festive gift boxes.
Nuts and dry fruits provide varying amounts of protein, fibre, healthy fats and essential micronutrients, making them versatile additions to festive menus. The campaign focuses on improving nutritional quality, managing portions and reducing dependence on added sugar.
The initiative also connects with the wider public health conversation around sugar consumption. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s Eat Right India initiative encourages consumers to gradually reduce sugar intake, while the World Health Organization recommends limiting free sugars to less than 10% of daily energy intake, with further benefits associated with lower consumption.
Through #SwapTheSweet, NDFC(I) is encouraging households, home cooks, confectioners and gifting businesses to reconsider familiar festive offerings. The campaign also invites consumers to share healthier recipes and everyday food swaps, extending the conversation beyond the festive period.
As an apex industry body representing the nuts and dry fruits value chain, NDFC(I) is positioning the campaign within its broader focus on nutrition awareness and responsible consumption.
