New AI agent can complete multi-step tasks across apps, files and browsers, with rollout beginning for Pro, Enterprise and Edu users
OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Work, a new AI agent designed to complete complex, multi-step tasks across connected apps, files and workflows, alongside the rollout of its latest frontier model, GPT-5.6.
The company said ChatGPT Work moves beyond answering prompts by independently carrying out work such as creating presentations, spreadsheets, documents and web apps, while remaining on long-running projects for hours if required.
Powered by GPT-5.6 and built on Codex technology, the new capability is designed to reason through multi-step tasks, follow templates and reference files, and execute workflows across web, mobile and desktop. OpenAI said more than five million people use Codex every week, with over one million now using it for work beyond software development.
Users can connect ChatGPT Work to workplace tools including Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, calendars, CRMs and project management platforms through plugins. The AI agent can gather information from these sources, generate work products, refine drafts and complete recurring workflows while allowing users to review progress and approve key actions.
OpenAI has also introduced Scheduled Tasks, enabling ChatGPT Work to automate recurring activities such as updating reports, monitoring customer feedback, refreshing presentations and tracking website changes.
The company is launching Sites in public beta, allowing users to turn documents and data into interactive websites or web apps, including dashboards, project trackers, launch calendars and internal portals.
On desktop, the updated ChatGPT app now includes a built-in browser, support for local files and applications, and Computer Use capabilities that enable the AI agent to perform actions across apps and browsers on a user’s behalf. OpenAI also announced that the Codex app will be merged into the new ChatGPT desktop application while retaining its coding capabilities.
OpenAI said early enterprise users have applied ChatGPT Work across functions including sales, finance, marketing, engineering and operations to automate repetitive workflows, accelerate analysis and improve productivity. Internally, the company said nearly all of its teams, including finance and sales, are already using ChatGPT Work and Codex.
The rollout begins immediately for Pro, Enterprise and Edu users on web and mobile, with availability for Plus and Business subscribers expected over the coming days. The updated ChatGPT desktop app is now available globally for Windows and Mac, with Chat, Work and Codex features accessible across all plans, including the Free tier.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Work represents the first step towards expanding ChatGPT from a conversational assistant into an AI system capable of independently completing complex, real-world work.
