Tata Sons is reportedly narrowing its search for a successor to Chairman N Chandrasekaran, with Tata Steel CEO and MD T V Narendran, Tata Sons Executive Director and Group CFO Saurabh Agrawal, and National Stock Exchange (NSE) MD and CEO Ashish Chauhan emerging as the key contenders, according to media reports.
Narendran is understood to be the leading internal candidate, given his long association with the Tata Group and experience at the helm of Tata Steel. Agrawal, who has held senior finance roles within the group, brings a background in investment banking, capital allocation and financial management to the race.
Chauhan represents a potential external choice. A veteran of India’s financial markets and one of the executives involved in setting up the NSE, he has experience across capital markets, technology and institutional management.
The succession process is still underway and no final decision has been made. The Tata Sons board, along with the Tata Trusts, which hold controlling ownership in the holding company, is expected to play a key role in the appointment.
Chandrasekaran took over as Tata Sons chairman in 2017 and is currently serving his second five-year term. He has indicated that he will not seek another term after his tenure ends on February 20, 2027.
