OpenAI India has marked Teachers’ Day with a new film that takes a humorous look at students using ChatGPT for their schoolwork, and the difficulty of hiding it from teachers who know their students well.
The film opens with a student explaining the mitochondria and its role in producing ATP. When the teacher asks him just the spelling of mitochondria, he struggles to respond. In another classroom scene, a teacher asks students to write an essay. A student’s submission, however, sounds noticeably more polished than expected, prompting the teacher to question whether the words are really theirs.
The film showcases multiple such scenarios and plays on the idea that students may try to make AI-generated assignments less obvious by removing certain signs of AI use. The teachers, however, remain unconvinced, with “we know” serving as the recurring line. The idea is a simple one. An answer may be easy to submit, but a student still has to understand it when a teacher asks them to explain it.
OpenAI puts the spotlight on teachers themselves. It uses the moment to acknowledge that the best teachers have never been the ones who simply give us the answer, but those who ask the next question, make us think and help us arrive at the answer ourselves. In a way, the film places the role of the teacher ahead of the technology.
The film eventually turns from the classroom gag to ChatGPT’s intended use as a learning tool for teenagers. OpenAI says ChatGPT for Teens includes features designed to help younger users work through concepts rather than simply receive answers. Among these is Study Mode, which takes students through a problem step by step, using guiding questions, hints and feedback. The company also highlights Quizzes and Learning Visualizations, along with responsible homework reminders intended to discourage students from simply outsourcing their assignments to AI. OpenAI also points to controls for families, including Study Hours, Quiet Hours and break reminders, which allow parents and teens to set boundaries around the use of ChatGPT.
The Teachers’ Day film is part of OpenAI’s communication around ChatGPT for Teens and its learning-focused features, using the familiar classroom dynamic to make its point.
