WhatsApp has begun rolling out username reservations, allowing users to secure a unique username ahead of the feature's wider launch later this year.
The move is designed to give users an alternative way to connect without sharing their phone numbers, offering greater privacy when messaging new contacts or joining group conversations. According to the platform, users will need to know a person's exact username to initiate contact, as there will be no searchable directory or username suggestions.
To provide an additional layer of control, WhatsApp is also introducing an optional username key, which users can require others to enter before sending a first message.
Creators, small businesses and organisations will have the option to claim their existing Instagram or Facebook usernames to maintain a consistent identity across Meta's platforms.
Users can reserve a username by navigating to Settings > Account > Username on the latest version of the app. The feature will be rolled out gradually over the coming months, with WhatsApp notifying users once usernames become available in their country.
