Zomato has introduced a new ‘Low Plastic Packaging’ filter on its app, allowing users to identify restaurants that use alternatives to plastic packaging while ordering food. The feature is aimed at helping users factor packaging choices into their ordering decisions more easily.
The filter is available under the ‘Trust Markers’ section on the Zomato app and highlights restaurants that are part of the platform’s Plastic-Free Future Program. These restaurants primarily use non-plastic materials such as paper, bagasse, glass and aluminium for packing their main menu items. Restaurants meeting the criteria are also marked with a ‘Low plastic packaging’ tag on their menu pages, along with a clear mention in the order summary.
Launched in December 2024, the Plastic-Free Future Program has expanded to include 10,000 restaurants across 290+ brands and 490+ cities. With the introduction of the new filter, these participating restaurants are expected to gain greater visibility among users, while also encouraging more restaurant partners to adopt alternatives to plastic packaging.
Commenting on the launch, Anjalli Ravi Kumar, Chief Sustainability Officer, said, “Consumers today appreciate the option of making more sustainable choices while ordering from restaurants online. As more alternatives to plastic packaging emerge, we’ve seen environmentally-conscious restaurant brands embrace these options faster than others and join our Plastic-Free Future Program. We’re introducing the ‘low plastic packaging filter’ to make it easier for users, like you and me, to discover these restaurants and motivate more restaurants to join the movement. We've already facilitated 80 million orders from Plastic-Free-Future Program restaurants, and we hope that users will use the filter and contribute to a greener future!”
In addition to the filter, Zomato continues to operate a voluntary plastic waste recycling initiative focused on 100% plastic-neutral deliveries. Under this programme, the company recycles plastic waste equivalent to the amount used by restaurants for food delivery packaging. Since FY23, Zomato has recycled approximately 45,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste.
