As synthetic media becomes harder to detect and easier to produce, social media platforms are under growing pressure to prove that what users see—and what brands pay to appear next to—is credible. Against this backdrop, platforms across the ecosystem have begun rolling out labels that identify AI-generated content, positioning transparency as a step toward restoring advertiser confidence and stabilising ad revenues.
Platforms including Meta, YouTube and X have introduced or expanded such disclosure mechanisms, signalling a broader industry shift toward clarifying what is real and what is algorithmically generated.
But the move also raises a larger question: can simple disclosure rebuild brand trust in an ecosystem still grappling with concerns around moderation, misinformation, and unpredictable content adjacency?
For advertisers, brand safety has long been about more than identifying manipulated or synthetic posts. It is about ensuring that their messages appear in environments that are predictable, credible and aligned with brand values. In that sense, while AI labels may improve transparency, marketers say they are only one part of a much larger puzzle.
The rise of generative AI has accelerated the production of synthetic content—from manipulated images and deepfake videos to AI-written posts that can mimic real voices. Social media platforms have responded with disclosure tools, but the scale and speed of content creation continue to outpace enforcement.
However, industry observers say transparency alone cannot address deeper brand safety concerns.
“AI content labels are a useful step toward transparency, but labels alone cannot guarantee brand safety,” says Hiren Joshi, Founder and CEO, Bee Online. “Advertisers evaluate platforms based on the overall quality of the environment, not just individual content-markers.”
For brands spending large budgets on digital media, the context surrounding an advertisement often matters as much as the message itself. A brand that appears beside misleading or inflammatory content can face reputational damage regardless of whether that content carries an AI label. As Joshi puts it, “What truly builds advertiser confidence is consistent moderation, reliable enforcement, and predictable content standards.”
That distinction between transparency and trust lies at the heart of the debate around AI labelling. According to Shashi Bhushan, Chairman of the Board at Stellar Innovations, advertisers rarely worry about whether content is generated by AI in isolation. Their larger concern is whether harmful or misleading material continues to circulate widely on the
platform. “The presence of AI-generated content labels helps create transparent information but fails to deliver complete assurance to advertisers,” Bhushan explains. “Brand safety concerns typically arise not just from whether content is AI-generated, but from the broader risk of ads appearing next to harmful, misleading, or controversial material.”
In other words, disclosure may help audiences understand the nature of a post, but it does little to control the environment in which brands appear. For advertisers assessing where to place their budgets, the broader moderation track record of a platform often carries greater weight.
Brands, Bhushan notes, “consider their environment to be unpredictable when harmful or misleading posts continue to circulate widely despite labeling.”
Several experts believe that labels serve more as symbolic gestures than structural solutions. “A label isn’t a lie, but it is just not enough, and the market is sophisticated enough to spot the difference,” says Suumit Kapoor, Brand Growth Consultant. Kapoor points out that while some platforms have made progress in rebuilding advertiser confidence, trust recovery requires more than transparency tools. “Trust is rebuilt in the gap between what a platform claims and what it consistently delivers when nobody is writing a pitch deck about it,” he adds.
The challenge is particularly significant given that social media platforms have faced scrutiny over moderation practices. Even as brand safety scores improve, marketers remain cautious until those improvements prove durable over time. For many advertisers, Kapoor says, the central question remains: what lies outside the measured metrics?
If transparency is only the starting point, the next step is enforcement.
“Transparency is important, but transparency alone does not solve brand safety concerns,” says Joshi. “Advertisers want to understand how content is labeled and moderated, but they also expect structural safeguards.” Those safeguards include algorithms that limit the amplification of harmful content, consistent enforcement of policies and clear accountability when rules are violated. Without these mechanisms, labels risk becoming little more than informational tags—useful for users but insufficient for marketers making large advertising decisions.
“A label may tell you that content is AI-generated,” says Amit Relan, CEO and Co-founder of mFilterIt, “but it doesn’t fundamentally solve the brand safety challenge.” Relan explains that the core issue for advertisers is not how content is produced but how it behaves within the platform’s distribution system. According to him, "From an advertiser’s perspective, the real concern isn’t whether content is AI-generated—it’s whether harmful or misleading content is still being amplified and appearing next to brand messages.”
Another challenge lies in how AI labels are implemented. Many platforms rely on creators to voluntarily disclose when content is generated or altered using AI. While that approach encourages transparency among responsible creators, it leaves room for bad actors who bypass the system.
Lloyd Mathias, Brand Consultant, believes this reliance on voluntary disclosure limits effectiveness. “I believe that just having AI labeling, which platforms are doing, is not good enough,” he says. “Let consumers feel more positive about a brand where AI content is clearly labeled… but I don't think that's enough.”
Mathias argues that stronger deterrents are required for those who fail to disclose AI-generated material. “There has to be a strong incentive for a post that is not labeled. There should be some penal mechanism. If somebody does not label a post which is generated through AI, that has to be severely penalized.” Without meaningful consequences, disclosure systems risk becoming easy to ignore. For markets like India, where misinformation and viral content can spread rapidly, the stakes may be even higher.
Premkumar Iyer, Chief Operating Officer at HAWK (Gozoop Group), believes the effectiveness of labels will depend on how platforms respond when harmful content spreads. “My view is simple, transparency helps, but by itself it does not rebuild trust,” Iyer says. “When a feature depends on users voluntarily disclosing AI-generated content, it feels too soft for a problem that is already being exploited aggressively.” He adds that misuse of AI-generated content will not always come from creators acting in good faith: “In India, misuse of AI content will not come only from creators acting in good faith. It will also come from those trying to mislead, scam, provoke, or damage reputations.” As a result, the real test of platform credibility will be how quickly misinformation is addressed and removed. “Real confidence will come from how the platform responds when misinformation spreads, how quickly take-downs happen, and whether even a user can get support when fake content harms them.”
The tension between open expression and brand safety has long defined social media. Platforms balance open debate with the need to maintain advertiser-friendly environments.
“First and foremost, platforms need to demonstrate that they will generally keep environments devoid of too many negativities,” says Mathias. He acknowledges that controversy is often inevitable but argues that some level of curation is necessary. “Platforms have to do a little bit more to make it a more brand-safe environment so that brands are more comfortable advertising, not just become spaces that thrive on controversy.”
That balance between preserving free expression and protecting brand environments may ultimately determine whether transparency tools translate into advertiser confidence.
Beyond AI labels, marketers say platforms must provide greater control over where ads appear. According to Bhushan, advertisers are increasingly looking for safeguards that minimise the risk of adjacency to unsuitable content. “The solution requires the development of better moderation guidelines which should enforce stricter restrictions on dangerous content through algorithmic controls,” he says. Platforms must also offer stronger brand safety filters and clearer reporting systems that allow advertisers to understand the context surrounding their campaigns.
Joshi echoes this view, noting that advertisers want visibility and control rather than assurances. “Platforms need to give advertisers greater control and visibility over where their ads appear,” he says. That includes improved adjacency controls, stronger brand safety filters, and partnerships with independent verification organisations.
For media planners, AI labels may function more as a baseline requirement than a decisive factor in ad spending. Mathias describes them as a 'vital hygiene factor' necessary to maintain credibility but unlikely to drive major shifts in media allocation.
Labels may reduce deception in the content environment, but they rarely determine whether a platform becomes a core advertising channel. Instead, platforms must demonstrate that they can consistently deliver a stable and brand-safe environment over time. The rollout of AI-generated content labels reflects a broader shift across social media as synthetic media becomes ubiquitous. But it also highlights how complex the trust equation has become.
For advertisers, disclosure alone cannot solve systemic concerns around moderation, amplification and platform governance. Labels may clarify what content is, but they do not control how that content spreads or where ads appear beside it. Ultimately, rebuilding brand confidence will require a combination of transparency, enforcement and accountability. As Kapoor puts it, labels are symbols of intent, but trust is built through consistent action. In a digital ecosystem increasingly shaped by AI, platforms may find that transparency is only the beginning.
