Decoding Flipkart’s marketing approach: Pratik Shetty on strategy and scale

Flipkart has built its marketing approach on a consistent idea of standing apart without necessarily breaking away. In a category where brands often converge on similar formats and moments, Flipkart’s strategy has been to follow consumer shifts but interpret them through its own lens.

At the centre of this is a system that blends brand and performance rather than separating the two. Pratik Shetty, Vice President Growth and Marketing, Flipkart notes, the brand has always used humour as a core asset, but is now refining how it plays out across different moments. Campaigns today are structured across always-on activity, event-led bursts and large properties like Big Billion Days, each serving a distinct role within the overall mix.

Recent campaigns reflect this calibrated approach. A rap-style campaign, for instance, was not just a stylistic shift but built on insights around how women in Tier 2 markets browse shopping apps as a secondary activity, often leading to unplanned discovery. Similarly, the ‘Only Fans’ summer campaign was designed to engage younger users entering appliance categories. This campaign was aligned with the insight that Gen Z now contributes around 40-45% of Flipkart’s customer base.

Beyond campaigns, differentiation is being driven by sharper cohort-led planning. Instead of focusing only on categories, Flipkart is mapping communication to specific audience segments and their evolving consumption patterns. High-frequency categories like fashion and beauty are used to drive acquisition, while electronics and appliances focus on trust and higher-value transactions.

The media mix further supports this system. Investments span television and connected TV for scale, alongside a strong digital layer, with print, outdoor and emerging formats adding contextual reach. Creator-led commerce is also becoming central, with influencer ecosystems increasingly tied to transactions rather than just awareness.

Newer verticals such as Flipkart Minutes are being positioned around value, assortment and reach, with parallel focus on brand-building and customer acquisition as the service scales. Overall, Flipkart’s approach points to a more structured marketing model where consistency, cohort focus and integrated execution are becoming key levers to stand out in a crowded market.
