HDFC Bank has appointed former Finance Secretary and Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar as its Part-time Chairman, subject to approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The bank's Board has also approved his appointment as an Independent Director for a four-year term, effective 30 June 2026, subject to shareholder approval.
Kumar's three-year tenure as Part-time Chairman will commence from the date approved by the RBI. His appointment follows the resignation of former Chairman Atanu Chakraborty earlier this year, with Keki Mistry serving as interim Chairman in the meantime.
A 1984-batch IAS officer, Kumar has held several senior positions in the Government of India, including Finance Secretary and Secretary of the Department of Financial Services, where he oversaw banking sector reforms and public sector bank recapitalisation. He later served as the 25th Chief Election Commissioner of India.
The appointment is expected to bring continuity to the bank's governance as it strengthens its leadership at the board level.
