The Indian Express Group has partnered with OpenAI to make its journalism more discoverable through ChatGPT, with selected summaries and excerpts to carry clear source attribution and direct links to the original articles.
The partnership will initially cover The Indian Express, The Financial Express and the Group’s business properties, spanning live and archived content across English, Hindi, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali and Gujarati.
Under the arrangement, when relevant Express Group content is surfaced in response to questions on ChatGPT, users will be able to identify the publication and access the full article on the Group’s platforms.
“Our legacy of agenda-setting investigations, news breaks and a breadth of voices that cut across the political spectrum makes the Express Group unique in Indian media. We have always been open to new technologies, and this partnership creates a new way for readers to discover the work of our large national network of journalists and their rigorous reporting with clear attribution and a direct path to the original source. As technology changes how people find and consume information, our priority remains credible journalism, with full editorial responsibility for everything we publish,” said Nandagopal Rajan, CEO, Indian Express Digital.
The Group will retain complete editorial control over its journalism, with OpenAI having no role in deciding which stories are reported, how they are produced or the editorial conclusions reached.
The two organisations will also explore the use of OpenAI technology across areas such as archive discovery, research, data analysis, translation, reader services and business operations. Any use of AI in editorial workflows will remain subject to the Group’s editorial standards, policies and human oversight.
“The Indian Express has an extraordinary tradition of in-depth investigations and unbiased reporting that helps people understand India in all its depth and complexity. We want AI to help more people discover that work, with clear attribution and direct links, reflecting our commitment to working constructively with publishers and developing technology that supports journalists, readers, and a strong news ecosystem,” said Varun Shetty, Vice President - Media Partnerships, OpenAI.
The partnership is part of OpenAI’s broader engagement with news organisations to improve access to reliable information, support responsible AI applications for publishers and develop new ways for audiences to discover original journalism.
