The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has constituted a high-level study group, chaired by CBFC Chairman Prasoon Joshi, to develop a roadmap for the long-term growth of India's film industry.
Announced following a review meeting led by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the panel has been tasked with submitting its recommendations within three months. Its mandate includes improving the global competitiveness of Indian cinema, assessing the impact of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual production, and identifying ways to increase access to institutional finance and alternative funding for filmmakers.
The committee will also consult industry stakeholders and state governments to recommend a comprehensive policy framework aimed at strengthening the country's film production, distribution and exhibition ecosystem.
Alongside the panel, the ministry has circulated Model State Cinema Regulations to state governments to simplify approvals for cinema halls and multiplexes. The proposed framework seeks to reduce regulatory hurdles, encourage investment in exhibition infrastructure and expand cinema access, particularly across Tier-II, Tier-III and rural markets.
The twin initiatives come as the Indian film industry navigates rapid technological change, evolving audience behaviour and intensifying competition from global streaming platforms, with the government positioning the reforms as a step towards building a more competitive and future-ready cinema ecosystem.
