Truecaller has launched a new feature in India called 'Family Protection' aimed at helping households collectively guard against phone-based scams and fraud.
The feature allows up to five people to form a “safety circle” within the app, enabling them to share spam alerts, block suspicious numbers and manage certain security settings across devices. The rollout in India follows earlier launches in markets including Sweden, Chile, Malaysia and Kenya.
The move comes amid a rise in sophisticated scam attempts such as impersonation fraud, so-called “digital arrest” scams and AI-generated voice cloning that increasingly target individuals through phone calls.
According to the company, the feature is designed to allow a digitally savvy family member—often someone responsible for managing technology within the household—to oversee basic security settings for the group. This administrator can receive alerts about potential fraud attempts and remotely end suspicious calls for other members.
“Just knowing who is calling is no longer enough. Today, the real question is whether the call is safe to answer,” said Rishit Jhunjhunwala, CEO, Truecaller. He added that scam tactics are becoming more emotionally manipulative, making collective protection within families increasingly relevant.
The system also includes shared block lists and customisable security levels across both Android and iOS devices. While the core feature is free, additional tools are available through the company’s paid premium family plan.
Truecaller said the feature has been built with privacy controls that prevent family members from accessing each other’s call logs, messages or personal data, while still benefiting from shared security features.
The Stockholm-headquartered company says its platform currently has more than 450 million active users globally and has surpassed one billion downloads since launch. In 2025, the company said it identified around 68 billion spam and fraud calls worldwide.
