Hyundai Motor Company and TVS Motor Company have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to develop and commercialise electric three-wheelers (E3Ws) for India, with plans to expand into additional markets.
The partnership follows the presentation of an E3W concept at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 and marks a move towards product development and eventual commercialisation. The vehicles are being designed to address last-mile mobility needs in India, taking into account local road conditions and urban infrastructure.
Under the agreement, Hyundai Motor will lead design and co-development, leveraging its research and development capabilities and human-centric design approach. TVS Motor will co-develop the vehicles using its electric three-wheeler platform, and will lead manufacturing and sales in India, with its local operations catering to domestic demand and potential exports.
“Hyundai Motor Company has long explored ways to contribute to improving India’s transportation environment as a key market, and our collaboration with TVS Motor is a strategic decision rooted in that effort. We hope the co-developed E3W enables broader access to safer and more sustainable transportation for people across the country.” said Joongsun Ko, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy & Planning at Hyundai Motor Company.
The companies stated that the E3W will be engineered to address mobility challenges in India, while aligning with sustainability requirements.
Sharad Mishra, President, Group Strategy, TVS Motor Company, said, “At TVS Motor Company, we aim to transform quality of life through sustainable and accessible mobility. The Joint Development Agreement marks an important step in our partnership with Hyundai Motor Company and advances our shared ambition to develop electric three-wheeler solutions. By bringing together complementary strengths - including our electric three-wheeler platform, engineering expertise, and deep understanding of customer needs - we are well-positioned to deliver purpose-built products for India and additional markets. This collaboration reinforces our commitment to scalable, sustainable last-mile mobility while setting new benchmarks in technology, quality, customer experience, and a legacy of trust."
As part of the agreement, the companies plan to localise component manufacturing for the E3W, with major components to be sourced and produced in India. According to the companies, this is expected to support the domestic supply chain, reduce costs and improve after-sales support.
The concept showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 included features such as adaptive ground clearance, safety enhancements, ergonomic design and configurations suited for passenger and goods transport.
The companies stated that the project will now move towards testing, localisation refinement and regulatory approvals, with dedicated teams set up to accelerate development timelines.
